Residents of the Akosombo enclave in the Eastern region are pleading with the government to move them to the Saglemi Housing Unit till the local floodwaters subside.

Their appeal follows the recent decision by the Volta River Authority (VRA) to release water from the Akosombo Dam, citing that it had surpassed its maximum water capacity.

John Agbotah, the Unit Committee Chairman of the Sokpoe Electoral Area, explained on Onua TV/FM’s Maakye show that allowing residents to occupy the vacant Saglemi buildings temporarily would provide much-needed relief, as many have been left without shelter. He described the dire challenges residents faced, including the presence of snakes in their submerged homes due to the unexpected spillage, leading to significant hardship.

Agbotah highlighted that residents had to rely on the generosity of others for food as they were stranded in floodwaters. Furthermore, he expressed concerns that the VRA might release even more water, causing additional distress to the residents.

The VRA’s decision to spill water from the Akosombo Dam was based on a consistent increase in water levels. Many affected residents are currently homeless and are urging the government to assist them. While residents claim they were not informed about the spillage, the VRA maintains that it notified its key stakeholders on September 12.
